“The Virgin of Guadeloupe”

The Virgin of Guadeloupe is the name of chapter ten of Thomas Friedman’s book, The World Is Flat. Let’s have a look of what he is saying about today’s globalization and the art of industry.

Firstly, the importance of the Virgin of Guadeloupe that is being produced in the Chinese workforce and sent into Mexico. What Thomas Friedman is saying here is simply lying behind the background of Chinese role in the field of industry. In addition, globalization and the advancement of technology are two key principles the Chinese workforce has reached. Chinese mega-structure industry now is producing things that were someday ere unknown to them. So, in exporting goods Chinese have a great role in the world which has taken the place of Mexicans’ recently. What is seen as phenomenon here is Chinese success in taking the Mexican’s second U.S. importer, as the author says.

Secondly, Mexico failed to endeavor today’s globalization. In turn, Mexican economy suffers. Because of the rapid increase of Chinese workforce and its capability to embrace today’s globalization, Mexicans show their failure to go along with all of these changes and cannot cope easily with it.

Lastly, exemplification of Irish economy is another key point within chapter ten. Ireland hugely succeeded in increasing the GDP. It is not only because they have good workers, but also because of its long-lasting plans vis-a-vis industry and other related forces. Naming this country as one of the most successful forces in Europe is something must be mentioned.

Dara IT

In this video, Thomas Friedman, the American computer-related genius, talks about his amazing book, The World Is Flat.

In the beginning of the video, the author talks about the first chapter of his book which is known as While I Was Sleeping. Within it, he explains our newly established world giving examples including China and India. Dividing human history into three different eras, the author tells how each stage of humanity has an effect on life and how it arranged to be changed as time passed. More, the third era according to Friedman, which begins from 2000 to the present, when the world started flattening as peoples started managing globalization to a great extend, has greatly accelerated business and greatly impacted industry.

In the middle of the video, Mr. Friedman reminds us about the second chapter of his book, The Flatteners. Briefly told, he talks about the ten flatteners of the second he mentioned in the second chapter. For example, supply chaining, in-forming and insourcing. He reminds of the flatteners of how they change the world and what profound impact they have on the daily life as a whole.

In the end of the video, however, Thomas Friedman mentions his third chapter of the book, The Triple of Convergence. In brief, I did not really get what this chapter really about due to some problems!

• Absolutely, Iraq can follow the steps the other nations had already followed to expand their abilities vis-à-vis technology and the ocean of computers and the internet. It, of course, gives the chance to Iraq to be one of the leading nations in the field of technology. However, it takes time, money, expertise, tolerance and patience. It, surly, can be applied for Iraq if the government wants to eliminate corruption and poverty.

Podcast

Hello, today’s podcast is about the latest statement of Steven Hawking which it says ”Heaven is a fairy story”.

In his latest statement for the Guardian, Steven Hawking says, “There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that’s a fairy story for people who afraid of the dark.” He briefly compares a man’s mind with a broken computer. So he dismantled the idea of one God, heavens and one creator.

He is known as “the genius of Britain” and is a scientist and cosmologist. So his speech sparkled an amazing discussion within believers and nonbelievers all over the world vis-à-vis the idea of God as one creator.

Podcasting

Dara Ali

Podcasting is a very good and reasonable source to gain knowledge about different matters. There are many podcasts one can download and listen to which are very helpful.

I, of course, believe that Podcasting is so helpful for the one who wants to learn about digital Story telling. It also gives tremendous information to the listener. There are many advantages of podcasting. First of all, because it is provided through the internet, one can easily download and listen to it whenever one wants. Secondly, downloading a podcast coasts nothing and it is for free. It, indeed, is amazing because everyone can gain it then.

However, I do not see any disadvantages of podcasting while it is provided through the internet and for free. Also, it can be easily used through the digital devices, so is there something I have to blame? Absolutely no.

The Last Four Flatteners

The last four flatteners Friedman talks about are those below:

Supply chaining
Comparing the modern retail supply chain to a river, the author explains supply chaining.
Using technology to improve sales and shipping, the author argues how technology can help getting a better scale in the field of marketing.

Insourcing
Doing a work of a company instead of another company in the world is the depth of insourcing. Friedman gives Toshiba Company as an example. The example briefly and explicitly explains the topic regarding Insourcing.

In-forming
Using the Google company and other search engines as example, Friedman tells how it is amazing to share the information through the Internet. He also argues that the rate of the internet users is souring day after day. It, indeed, greatly helps people in the world to find information as never the world seen it before.

The steroids
Friedman explain that having many digital and personal devices like mobile phones, iPods, and etc, greatly help to facilitate the personal staff. For example, using a cell phone, man can do everything in personal and in a greatly and never-expected speed with accuracy.

Thre Three Flatteners

Dara Ali

The next three flatteners the author mentions in his book, The World Is Flat are:

Uploading. It was a very good advantage added to the internet. The author mentions that as "the most disruptive force of all." It is because it helped people to upload what they wanted other to share.

Outsourcing: the author mentions that outsourcing has changed to world of the internet at al. It is because it allowed companies to “split service and manufacturing activities into components.” It was efficient and coasted less.

And the third flattener he mentions is Offshoring which I do not know much about.

The Presentation Review

Dara Ali
The Presentation...
My presentation was about the Google website. All the three students were, Hawre, Ismail and me. I would like to point out the strengths and weaknesses of our presentation.

I believe that every mother’s child is handsome; therefore, I think the presentation was as good as it can be. Considering the time, which we tended to manage greatly, it was excellent to have it in less than 7 minutes. Of course, we could easily deliberate the speech, and we were fluent while talking. Organization was strength of the presentation, too. Familiarity with the topic by all of us was another one. Good eye contact, having confidence, and being self-dependent were good too.

However, I believe there were some weaknesses. I, Dara, stood behind the other presenters while the presentations intentionally. It was not good. And, we did not introduce ourselves at the beginning. These were the faults.

I believe we are capable to do well the next time. I promise I will not make the same mistakes again. We will do it better.
